BMW has just officially announced its hotly anticipated new BMW M5, and it sounds bonkers on paper. For a start, this will the fastest M car BMW has ever built. Much of it has to do with its ridiculously powerful twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8, which churns out a monumental 600hp and 750nm of torque. This is enough to catapult the car from a standstill to 100km/h in just 3.2 seconds - a time that will get bona fide supercars like the Ferrari 488GTB and Lamborghini Huracan looking over their shoulders. Top speed is electronically limited to 250km/h, but if owners equip the car with the optional M Driver’s Package, the M5 will continue hurtling toward the horizon until it hits 305km/h.
However, what’s interesting about this new M5 is that will only be available as an automatic. Specifically, it has BMW’s excellent 8-speed M Steptronic transmission. Additionally, the M5 will also get a sophisticated all-wheel drive system called M xDrive, making it the first M car to ever get all-wheel drive. However, traction control can be turned off and the car can also be switched to rear-wheel drive mode, allowing owners to indulge themselves in some massive power slides and skids. Sounds like the best of both worlds then?
