Relax, recharge and smooth your skin

Stress is an unavoidable part of life, but that doesn’t mean you should ignore it. The modern woman is often plagued by lack of sleep and stress accumulated from long hours at work. The signs of skin suffering from stress damage include dull, sallow complexion, under-eye shadows, tired-looking skin and roughness. Such a lifestyle not only takes a toll on the body but also compromises skin health.

Stress also dilates blood vessels, which causes redness and aggravates rosacea. Another side effect is skin becomes dehydrated, sensitive, and more susceptible to damage. Besides causing lines from furrowing your brow, stress also makes you look markedly older. You already lose 1 per cent of your skin’s collagen supply every year after you hit age 20, but stress can accelerate that. When skin cells are unable to develop and thrive well throughout their life cycle, it potentially leads to reduced skin protective functions and moisture retention capabilities.

The good news is that in many cases, stress is manageable. With some patience and a few useful strategies, you can reduce your stress and more importantly, improve your skin condition.

7AM WAKE UP YOUR SKIN

Pulling frequent all-nighters can lead to dull complexion and those dreaded dark circles. You can now revive sheen and regain clarity in just 30 seconds by boosting your skin’s metabolism with ORBIS Whip Soda Pack Bright, $36 (100 g). The gradual warming effect of Carbonic Acid foam and Ginger Extract revitalises the sluggish metabolism of your skin. What’s more? Your facial lotion will absorb better.

Infused with collagen and royal jelly extract for resilience and moisture, the creamy bubbles cling to your skin, leaving it feeling moist and with renewed elasticity once you wash the foam off!

12PM GET MOVING

Exercise doesn’t necessarily mean power lifting at the gym or training for a marathon. A short walk around the office or simply standing up to stretch during a break at work can offer immediate relief in a stressful situation. Getting your blood moving releases endorphins and can improve your mood almost instantaneously.

3PM DRINK TEA

Tea contains healthy antioxidants, as well as theanine, an amino acid that has a calming effect on the nervous system. Try ORBIS Rooibos Blend Tea, $20 (15 sachets), which contains Rooibos and Ligonberry to promote moist and firm skin.

7PM REPAIR AND REVITALISE

Those back-to-back meetings and killer deadlines tend to cause excessive stress and exhaustion. Recharge drawn and fatigued skin with the new ORBIS Advancing Essence Gel, $52 (50 g), that nurtures the skin from within to fight against the demands of a hectic urban lifestyle.

This anti-stress essence contains a Sign Active Ingredient, derived from the Peppermint Plant which works to encourage the production of new skin cells. Another key ingredient is the Sea Grass Extract which induces energy generation allowing new skin cells to develop from the basal layer into plump healthy cells. Free of oil, fragrances, artificial colours and synthetic surfactants, it is a fuss-free complement to your daily skincare regime.

10PM SLEEP BETTER

Everyone knows stress can cause you to lose sleep. Unfortunately, lack of sleep is also a key cause of stress. This vicious cycle causes the brain and body to get out of whack and only gets worse with time. Make sure to get the doctor’s recommended seven to eight hours of sleep. Turn the TV off earlier, dim the lights, and give yourself time to relax before going to bed. It may be the most effective stress buster on our list.
