Here’s a bit of reverse psychology to help you tackle scary endeavours: Instead of trying to shut down your fear, let that heightened energy fuel you the way athletes, like former American extreme skier Kristen Ulmer, do. When you feel anxiety hit, recognise that tension as your body’s way of expressing excitement rather than angst, Kristen suggests in her new book, The Art of Fear: Why Conquering Fear Won’t Work and What to Do Instead. “That discomfort is here to help you come alive rather than being the thing that holds you back,” she says. The technique can work for just about anything – whether it’s a daunting physical feat or a mental one. Practise it, and the method will soon become habit.
