My Reading Room

There are good kinds of shadows to have on the face, like those under the cheekbones that make them look more sculpted. Then there are the bad ones under the eyes that emphasise your dark circles, or those around the mouth that make laugh lines more obvious. These unflattering shadows – caused by a combination of skin darkening and volume loss due to ageing – can make you look tired and older. This process is referred to by South Korean skincare brand Sulwhasoo as skin shadowing. Kate Kwon, brand science manager of Sulwhasoo’s brand science research team, explains: “A decline in the activity of the Balancing Brightening Factor [a genetic element in the skin], results in increased melanin production and a slowdown in collagen synthesis, which speed up skin pigmentation and ageing as well as the weakening of the skin’s structure.” In light of this, Sulwhasoo has reformulated some of the products in its brightening Snowise range, so customers can now reap both skin- firming and melanin-reducing benefits for a complexion that is radiant, plump and translucent – one that’s much like, according to the brand, “the bright exterior of a boiled egg”.

The star of the revamped range, Snowise Brightening Serum is powered by white ginseng saponin, the brand’s signature brightening ingredient. According to the brand, it is the first ginseng-derived brightening ingredient in the world, and it works to firm skin while reportedly regulating melanin production to reduce unsightly shadows. The revamped serum also has two and a half times more white ginseng polysaccharides than its predecessor. These wonder-workers are said to boost skin translucency and give dull complexions that sought-after lit-fromwithin quality.

Aside from the serum, four other products in the Snowise range have been reformulated: Brightening Exfoliating Gel, Brightening Spot Treatment, Brightening Cream and Brightening Mask. At the brand’s press junket in Koh Samui, Thailand, I’m lucky enough to be pampered with a facial that incorporates all five. Of the five products, I’m most impressed with the silky, viscous serum and the mask. The former sinks quickly into skin, and leaves it feeling dewy and looking seriously glowy.

As for the mask, I’m won over when I learn that it was fermented in white ginseng polysaccharides for two whole weeks and soaked in the brand’s Snowise Brightening Serum to give skin a double dose of radiance-boosting benefits. Plus, the bio-cellulose mask feels super comfortable on the face and adheres perfectly to the skin, which means you can do chores around th house without worrying about it slipping off . After using the Snowise range for two weeks, I notice that the darker areas on my visage, especially around my mouth and under the eyes, look more plump and radiant.
