My Reading Room

Good health is all about facts, numbers and knowing how to keep a balanced lifestyle. But when it comes to practice, many of us adopt rules that are more like superstition than fact. To help you reach your health goals, Borsch Med is helping to set the record straight on these common fat-related myths.

MYTH #1

SAVOURY FOODS ARE HEALTHIER THAN SWEET FOODS

In an effort to stay slim and healthy, many of us will skip dessert or stay away from sweets. But when it comes to meal time, we indulge in our favourite deep-fried foods and rich curries. And then we wonder, “Why aren’t we losing weight?” The truth is, these are high-fat foods, and fat is the most calorie-dense macronutrient (9 kcal/gram), as opposed to sugars/carbohydrates (4 kcal/gram) and protein (4 kcal/gram).

MYTH #2

A LOW-CARB DIET IS THE BEST WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT

Low-carb diets are now a popular option for shedding the kilos. But that shouldn’t give you the go-ahead to indulge in fatty foods. While unsaturated fatty acids get the thumbs up, rich dairy dishes, fatty meats and oily foods might only sabotage your health goals. Fat is broken down more slowly than both sugars and proteins, so excess fat – if not converted into energy – will be stored in your body, resulting in weight gain.

MYTH #3

I DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HIGH CHOLESTEROL IF IT DOESN’T RUN IN MY FAMILY

While there is a link between cholesterol levels and genetics, the consumption of foods rich in saturated fats and trans fats can cause the levels to spike. Some good fats like omega-3 and oleic acid (found in olive oil) can lower cholesterol levels, but unfortunately, the kinds of fats commonly found in our favourite savoury foods – like burgers and potato chips – are of the unhealthy sort, and can raise your cholesterol levels, increasing the risk of getting a stroke or heart attack.

MYTH #4

A HEALTHY BODY IS ONLY ABOUT DIET AND EXERCISE

When it comes to keeping healthy, you might think you only need to worry about your diet and exercise. But there is another vital factor – digestion. Poor digestion means your body is unable to break down foods properly, leading to inadequate nutrient absorption and the improper elimination of waste. It can also increase fluid retention, leaving you with a “puffy” appearance that you just can’t seem to get rid of.
