RELAX IN THE TAKARAGAWA ONSEN OSENKAKU IN GUNMA PREFECTURE, JAPAN, IN WINTER

The mountainous prefecture of Gunma, just 100km or so away from Tokyo, is home to some of Japan’s most popular onsens (hot springs). Takaragawa Onsen Osenkaku, a traditional ryokan, has some of the country’s most famous rotenburo (outdoor baths). At the end of a long day, sink your tired muscles into the steaming, soothing waters, which reportedly have medicinal properties. If you’re the adventurous sort, pay the ryokan a visit during winter for an adrenaline rush as you hop from the bitter cold into the hot water.

GO CAMEL TREKKING IN THE SAHARA DESERT IN MOROCCO

Go on your very own Arabian Nights adventure. Admire the sights as your animal lumbers across golden wind-sculpted sand dunes. Then, dine under a canopy of stars in the inky black sky before retiring to your tent and falling asleep to the hush of the vast desert. You won’t feel further away from home than here.

CATCH THE SUNSET IN SANTORINI, GREECE

Watching the sky set ablaze in fiery hues of red and gold that eventually mellow to a muted palette of blues and lavenders is something that can only be truly experienced in person. Cliffside village Oia, with its pristine white buildings housing cafes, taverns and art galleries set against a dramatic backdrop of the sun setting over the horizon, is the most popular place to get all your envy-inducing snaps.

HIKE TO THE RUINS OF MACHU PICCHU IN PERU

You can take the easy way out and opt for the three-and-a-half-hour train journey from Cusco, or go the way the people of the Inca empire did: on foot. The minimum two-day trek requires a certain level of fitness, but it means you can get up close and personal with the grandeur of the Andes mountains. Besides, the effort you put into reaching the peaks makes the incomparable views of the ancient city even sweeter.
