Israeli actress Gal Gadot, ex-Miss Israel and an allround cool girl, is also the face of Bamboo, the latest fragrance from Gucci. CARINA KOH chats up this multi-hyphenate in Berlin.
If you’re a superhero buff , Israeli actress Gal Gadot is probably no stranger to you. After all, the 30-year-old plays Wonder Woman in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, slated to hit theatres in March 2016. Gal may be the third actress to play Wonder Woman, but she’s the first non-American to land the role. While chatting with her in Berlin at the global launch of Gucci Bamboo, the fragrance she fronts, she shares that at castings, her reply to the question of what her dream role is is always “I don’t want to be a damsel in distress” – which is why I think she fits the Wonder Woman role to a T. Here, more interesting facts about the feisty mother of one.
SHE’S PERFECT AS THE FACE OF THE FRAGRANCE.
This floral-woody scent with notes of sandalwood, vanilla, lily and orange blossom has a sophisticated and sensual quality – much like Gal does."
SHE CAN HANDLE HER WEAPONS VERY WELL.
All Israeli women are required to serve in the military and Gal was no exception. She served in the Israel Defense Forces for two years as a sports trainer and went through formal military training, including combat and weapons training.
Gal joins the list of prominent Hollywood names – think actress Blake Lively and actor James Franco – who have fronted Gucci scents.
SHE KEEPS HER BEAUTY ROUTINE SIMPLE.
Gal attributes her glowing skin to the tons of water she drinks every day and the conscientious removal of makeup before bed. She believes in the old adage “less is more”, so she keeps her makeup light when she’s working. Incidentally, she’s avid fan of Gucci makeup, which, unfortunately, is not available in Singapore – yet.
SHE CAN RIDE A DUCATI.
If you’re a fan of the Fast & Furious movies, you probably already know that Gal played Gisele Yashar, a butt-kicking former Mossad agent who was a central character in the fifth and sixth instalments of the film franchise. What you probably don’t know: She performed her own stunts. Yes, all of them, including leaping off a Ducati motorcycle onto a Jeep. As it turns out, Gal is an avid biker and used to own a Ducati, but has stopped riding after becoming a mum – she has a four-year-old daughter with husband Yaron Varsano, an Israeli businessman.
WHEN SHE WAS YOUNGER, SHE WAS SUPER SPORTY AND TOTALLY CLUELESS ABOUT BEAUTY.
I was into sports like basketball, volleyball and tennis, and I wasn’t interested in beauty or fashion trends at all,” she says. “That changed after I won the title of Miss Israel and started modelling full-time.
"It feels surreal that I’m now the face of a fragrance by a major fashion house I’ve known since I was a little girl. I love how multi-faceted this scent is and I feel it represents me very well."
