This company specialises in Burmese teak, the best natural timber for decking, which is also used on cruise liners and luxury yachts, says Gary Tan. Certified to come from sustainable forests in Myanmar, the wood starts at $270 to $350 per square metre, depending on size. Cheaper natural woods include balau, chengal and ironwood.

Natural woods include chengal, balau, kapur, merbau, Burmese teak and American white oak. NZ Deck, a radiata pine from New Zealand, is a sustainable and pocket-friendly option, at $5.40 per metre. Composites include WPC (wood and plastic resin) PP, at $10 per metre; and PE, at $6.80 per metre. Green engineered woods include BB Deck (bamboo, $12.70 per metre) and Hevea Deck ($10 per metre).
