It was the best of times, it was the worst of times… While we’ve been on some amazing trips, the CLEO team also had its fair share of travel horror stories.

“Instead of booking a hotel room in Shanghai, I opted to stay in a private room in a hostel in a bid to save money. Imagine my horror when I saw naked boys running around (dangly bits and all) in the communal toilets! Needless to say, I checked out after the first night for a proper hotel.”Sheryl Seah, Senior Graphic Designer

“I returned to Singapore from a press trip covered in hives and rashes from neck to toe. And it was four days before Christmas! I rushed to see a doctor to find out what caused it. His answer? Bed bug droppings! VOM!!!! Worst. Trip. Ever.”Alicia Tan, Editor

“When I was in Greece with a friend, we encountered the worst pickpocket of all time. We caught him with his hand in my friend’s bag, and even after we turned around and said “Are you trying to pickpocket us?”, he still refused to let go. Believe it or not, he followed us across two streets until we ducked into a fast food store and told him (really loudly!) to leave us alone. 4 “There weren’t any real toilets at the grasslands of Inner Mongolia, so out of fear, I limited my liquid intake in the day. Mistake number one. That night, there was a campfire and I drank a lot of beer. Mistake number two. I spent the entire night in the yurt shivering with a fever. Guess who got a really bad case of dehydration?”Natalie Pang, Special Projects Writer

“My friend and I shared the same hotel room in Bangkok and we woke up to discover that we had identical bruises in the exact the same position on our left legs. We didn’t remember hitting against anything the day before. So that’s just weird…”Leong Li Yuan, Graphic Designer

“I went to NYC on my own for the first time and I forgot to bring my wallet! I was supposed to rent a car and I had no credit card or driver’s license with me. So I called an ex who was living in the US then to wire some money to me. On top of that, I took the wrong bus and had to take another bus in the middle of the night (or rather morning). Quite epic.”Cynthia Chew, Senior Beauty Editor

“I was staying in a shack by the beach at Ko Pha Ngan with some friends. On the second night while I was asleep, I felt something tickling my shoulder. I thought it was my bedmate, but it was a lizard the size of my forearm. I sprang out of bed and let out a scream that probably woke up the whole resort.”Syafii Ghazali, Sub-Editor

“My sister and I missed the last train to Kanazawa (which is five hours away from Tokyo) and we were stranded in Shibuya with nowhere to spend the night. Needless to say, it proved to be an eventful night where we spent hours eating Indian curry at the only 24-hour restaurant in the area, trawling the dead streets while shivering in the eight-degree weather with only thin sweaters!”Hidayah Idris, Web Writer
