THE TEACHER AND THE APPRENTICE, BRUNO GALLERY

ONGOING TILL 31 AUGUST This month, Bruno Gallery shines the spotlight on the works of Calman Shemi and his former assistant, Adriana Naveh. Shemi started as a sculptor, but went on to challenge himself by developing two unique painting techniques—lacquer paintings and window paintings. Naveh is also experimental with her mediums, choosing to create 3D scenes by using a palette knife and by mixing plaster spackle with acrylic paint. Visit brunoartgroup.com

ODYSSEY: NAVIGATING NAMELESS SEAS, SINGAPORE ART MUSEUM

ONGOING TILL 28 AUGUST The Singapore Art Museum takes you on a voyage of discovery with the help of 11 artists from Southeast Asia. The likes of Entang Wiharso from Indonesia, U-ram Choe from South Korea and Ashley Yeo from Singapore each examine their journeys of personal identity and the rough “storms” we face in our lives. ONGOING TILL 31 JULY Ruben Pang, Gabriela Butti and Weixin Chong are just three of the artists who will be showcasing their works at the new “Petrichor” exhibition at Shophouse 5. ZAO WOU-KI: NO BOUNDARIES, STPI

ONGOING TILL 28 AUGUST Singapore Tyler Print Institute has brought the works of famed French-Chinese artist Zao Wou-Ki to Singapore. The artist, whose career spanned nearly seven decades, worked in lithographs, ink and watercolour. Given that his name means “no boundaries,” it is only apt that he became known for constantly renewing his art though different mediums. Visit stpi.com.sg

IEO GEK CHING: EXPRESSIONS OF A HYBRID, MIAJA GALLERY

ONGOING TILL 31 JULY Singaporean artist Ieo Gek Ching is the next artist to show her works at the new shophouse gallery in Bukit Timah. The LaSalle graduate creates hybrid creatures to express her concerns about the ecological environment. Visit miajagallery.com

KLAUS, YEO WORKSHOP

29 JULY TO 28 AUGUST Art collective Hayama Projects will be holding a painting, sculpture and multi-media show at Yeo Workshop in Gillman Barracks. Using the Brothers Grimm folktale Hansel and Gretel as inspiration, the artists have put their own spin on the story, creating a character called Klaus, who removes the breadcrumbs that lead the fairytale heroes home. The themes of memory, landscape and labyrinth are all explored in this innovative exhibition. Visit yeoworkshop.com

BAZAAR ART JAKARTA 2016, THE RITZ-CARLTON JAKARTA, PACIFIC PLACE

25 AUGUST TO 28 AUGUST Presented by Harper’s BAZAAR Indonesia, the country’s first and biggest art fair will play host to some of Asia’s favourite artists. MASTERS OF DISTINCTION, ORCHARD ROAD

15 SEPTEMBER TO 15 OCTOBER Opera Gallery is about to light up Orchard Road once more with its latest Masters exhibition. Shoppers will be treated to works by Manolo Valdés, Niki de Saint Phalle and Robert Indiana, whose bold, forceful and symbolic pieces show how artists at the end of the 19th century began to challenge attitudes towards art and broke away from accepted methods. CAUSEWAYEXCHANGE 2016, VARIOUS VENUES

1 SEPTEMBER TO 11 SEPTEMBER Like its name suggests, CausewayEXchange looks to link the artistic and cultural sectors of Singapore and Malaysia. The event, which is now in its sixth year, will be holding theatre performances, film screenings and comedy nights at unique venues in Singapore. Look out for “Dialogue in the Dark,” an art exhibition guided by visually impaired guides; the Malaysian Film Festival, curated by veteran filmmaker Hassan Muthalib; and Teh Talks by creative entrepreneurs from both sides of the Causeway. ARTIST AND EMPIRE, NATIONAL GALLERY SINGAPORE

1 OCTOBER ONWARDS A collaborative venture by Tate Britain and National Gallery Singapore, “Artist and Empire” looks at how the British Empire was represented in the 16th century, to the present day.
