Oki MC363dn

A business multifunction device, Oki’s new MC363dn LED printer is equipped with a 250-sheet paper input tray and a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray. If that’s not enough, you can buy another 530-sheet tray (for $239) to bring this total up to 880 sheets. Its flatbed scanner has a 600 x 600dpi optical resolution as well as a 50-sheet reverse automatic document feeder (alas, that means it can’t do single-pass scanning).

It does come with a handful of appealing business features. These include LDAP, USB and network TWAIN scanning, and an overlay function to save logos or forms in memory for later use. It sports gigabit Ethernet, but wireless networking comes in the form of an optional $69 module. On the upside, the MC363dn supports modern mobile printing protocols, such as Google Cloud Print 2.0 and Apple AirPrint.

According to Oki, you also can update the printer to add new features when they become available. Setting up is quick and fuss-free. I especially like the roomy control panel with its blue backlit LCD and tactile keypad, which are old school but effective. Based on LED tech, the machine is also slightly more compact than laser MFPs of the same class, though it still weighs a good 29kg fully loaded.

The MC363dn reacts fast when it receives a job. I measured a very fast 29.8ppm mono and 25.8ppm color print speeds, with the first page typically out around 7 seconds after warm-up. That said, at times, the warm-up process took longer than expected, and the printer would attempt to print but at a slower rate.

At the default 600 x 600 dpi quality, text looks sharp and full-bodied. Colors are vivid and pleasing to the eye too, though it did struggle a bit with graphics with intricate patterns and gradations. Everything looks nicer at higher-quality Fine and ProQ settings, but expectedly, they use more toner. Overall, the Oki MC363dn is a safe printer.

Safe as in it prints fast and offers a decent set of business features. My only gripes are the occasional slowdowns and the lack of a duplex ADF. Regarding consumables, a 1,500-page color toner goes for $100 per color, and $68 for black toner. Highyield 3,000-page color and 3,500-page black toners are available too, at $185 and $126 respectively.

Conclusion

If your business demands a super-fast and all-rounded printer, this fits the bill.
