THE WELL-KNOWN ITALIAN SHIPYARD Sanlorenzo displayed the first yacht of the 460 EXP series at the last Monaco Yacht Show, and since then at least five models have been sold and the second is already at sea.

Sanlorenzo is one of the historic Italian shipyards, known all over the world for the ability to offer elegant and high-quality yachts.

The idea to start production of the 460 EXP was born from some requests by customers who want to live at sea in maximum comfort aboard an elegant yacht – but with the ability to sail up to the North Pole. Some clients asked for a yacht able to accommodate a large number of toys, to experience life at sea in multiple ways without limits. Sanlorenzo took the hint and began working with professionals inside and outside of the company on a new project named 460 EXP.

One of the elements required by the clients was a yacht below 500 gross tonnes, so the shipyard realised a 42-metre full displacement yacht of 460GT, a big goal in terms of volume. When visiting the yacht for the first time in Monaco, there was an impressive amount of interior space and natural light inside the main saloon and the Owner’s suite on the main deck. The wide superstructure offers more space than expected on a 42m yacht with the stern dedicated to toys and tenders.

On the upper deck there’s another surprise – an elegant and relaxing open air space at the stern, a lunch area protected from the sun and a surrounding passage that allows Owner and guests to reach the stairs to the sun deck, and the crew can manage all the operations connected to the bow manoeuvring systems and service tender.

The interior part of the upper deck includes a second saloon with a relaxation area, a bar, sofa and table, and at the bow the technological helm station with vertical windows that a ship of this type must have. From here it is possible to go to the sundeck where there are two very big sun-pads at the stern, two tables for breakfast with a bar area, and the central structure that includes stairs connecting all the decks.

At the bow, two sofas let you look forward during navigation or at anchor and enjoy a privileged sea view in a private way. On the lower deck, at mid-ship are four guest cabins, two double cabins and two with single beds, each with a private and comfortable bath.

There is also a convertible VIP cabin that is useful for crew if needed and for that reason it has a convertible bed. In front of this cabin there is a comfortable and spacious gym. For a yacht able to sail for a very long period while far from the home port, one of the most important elements is the crew area.

The Sanlorenzo 460 EXP has a very interesting solution with three crew cabins, plus the VIP convertible just mentioned, each with private bath and a big relaxation area with a dinette and sofa. The crew has space to live comfortably for a long time and the circuits used for services guarantee privacy for the Owner and guests. The technical specifications of this very elegant explorer yacht reveal the ability of the design group involved in this project and the Sanlorenzo shipyard to realise an explorer yacht that recalls the family feeling of all Sanlorenzo productions.

Looking at the yacht’s profile it is possible to recognise immediately the Sanlorenzo signs, something that many Owners around the world appreciate and was requested also by the five Owners who have already ordered the 460 EXP.

The full-displacement hull is steel and the superstructure is aluminium – a classic combination of materials, but an extraordinarily original yacht over all, thanks to the combination of the high quality and elegance of the interior and ability to sail without limits.

This is a yacht dedicated to Owners who want to discover the remotest places in the world with a level of comfort and elegance normally adopted on yachts that cruise in the Mediterranean, Caribbean or other typical yachting locations.

The hull was developed to offer high performance in terms of sea keeping, low resistance and the ability to sail at a maximum speed of 16 knots or economical speed of 11 knots, with a range of more than 4,000 nautical miles.

This naval project was developed by the internal staff at Sanlorenzo and studied carefully to meet the needs of an Owner who likes to explore the world in safety, comfort and reliability.

The first yacht produced and displayed at the Monaco Yacht Show, named Moka, confirms the shipyard’s successful work on this new explorer series. Last December, Moka left from the port of Viareggio and after a call in Palma de Mallorca, sailed towards Gibraltar and across the Atlantic Ocean for a total trip of 5,600nm, one month at sea and an average speed of 12.5 knots.

The yacht did not show any problems or serious issues – the hull, equipment and machinery did not suffer during the long navigation and different conditions experienced.

Sanlorenzo is able to offer high-quality yachts with the typical Italian charm and a recognisable design. A Sanlorenzo yacht remains part of this family even when, like the 460 EXP, it is a totally different project compared with others in the long history of this Italian shipyard that began producing yachts in 1958.

For almost 60 years yachts have carried the name of this successful yard, which has a high number of yachts under construction – most of them sold already – and offers a wide range of different proposals for any kind of Owner. It is not an easy job to realise a yacht that takes inspiration from commercial expedition ships and make it a highstandard motor yacht able to offer the same level of safety, but with all the details that a luxury yacht must have.

Sanlorenzo did it and the result is five units were sold already – each totally custom as the shipyard normally does on any of its yachts – and a lot of interest from old and new clients.
