On March 21, more than 250 women streamed into Big Splash at East Coast Park with a common goal: To clock as many skips as possible for the Gleneagles Hospital & Shape Strength for Life Skipping Rope Charity Challenge. For every five recorded, Gleneagles Hospital would commit $1 from the Khazanah IHH Healthcare Fund to provide free cataract treatment for needy seniors.

From 8am onwards, participants took turns to skip in 12 five-minute sessions. To give it their best shot, some gamely kicked off their shoes and socks, while others simply focused on maintaining their cadence – without stopping to brush off the sweat trickling down their faces. Those who tripped regained composure quickly and continued. To lend support, friends and family members gathered around the skipping zone and cheered participants on. Groovy tunes and lively chatter from event host and radio DJ Charmaine Yee added to the uplifting atmosphere.

At the end of the event, 109,485 skips were logged, raising a total of $21,897 for the cause. Participants celebrated by collecting their goodie bags and sipping on Florida’s Natural juice packs. The top 100 also received limited-edition GlenEgirl Fitibit Flex activity trackers (worth $129 each).

Prize winners or not, everyone left satisfied, knowing that they had done their part for charity – and got an awesome cardio workout while at it.

Good cause, fun event. I’ve never skipped for five minutes straight, and I’m proud to have clocked 735 skips. When are we doing this again?

This collaboration between Shape and Gleneagles Hospital has given me a great opportunity to give back to society. As a women’s event, it had a very encouraging atmosphere.

I don’t exercise much, so 257 skips in five minutes is a good start.

This is a novel event. I have no regrets joining! In fact, I’m motivated to start skipping again!

I’m here to raise as much money as possible for charity. I targeted 800 skips, but I’m happy to have done 791.
