Rolls-Royce’s anticipated update to the venerable Phantom series will involve some state-of-the-art technology making it aboard the 2018 edition. Think satelliteaided transmission, overdue digital instrumentation, and the next iteration of air suspension mechanisms that tick millions of times each second just so you can recline in the plush rear seats, blissfully ignorant of the minuscule bumps present even on well-paved roads. To facilitate this, the most powerful headlights in the consumer market have been paired with a road-scanning camera so the car can brace itself for any undulation.
But what aficionados will notice most is the drastic, sweeping changes to the dashboard and instrument panel. In their place is now a slab of toughened glass which houses a massive 31.4cm high-resolution display. The strip on the passenger side is reserved for showcasing art – a curious choice explained by director of design Giles Taylor.
“In the 18th century, miniatures were highly fashionable and valuable items of art that allowed their owners to carry images of their loved one with them wherever they travelled. Now, our clients will be able to do the same.” One owner put a 3D-printed, gold-plated map of his DNA on display.
