The Nio EP9 is made by Chinese electric car startup NextEV, it has four electric motors and produces a megawatt of power, which is the equivalent of 1,341hp. That’s more than any road-going Ferrari, McLaren or Lamborghini.

The effects of such incredible power are ludicrous. 0 to 100km/h happens in 2.7 seconds, while 200km/h appears on the speedometer in just a shade over 7 seconds. Keep your foot planted and you can hit 300km/h in under 16 seconds.

As a result of this phenomenal power, the nio EP9 has clinched the title of world’s fastest electric car around the famous nüburgring circuit. It did the round in just 7 minutes and 5 seconds, beating the previous record - set by the Toyota TMG EV P002 - by a whopping 17 seconds.

What’s even more amazing was that the record-breaking run was done with the nio EP9 running at just 80% of full power, because of fears that the batteries would overheat. NextEV’s simulations suggest that if the car had been running at 100% throughout, it would have completed the circuit in 6 minutes and 48 seconds, which means it would have matched the radical Sr8 LM for the fastest lap set by any street legal car.
