If you want your child to get excited about learning mother tongue languages (MTL) and pick up strategies to support their MTL learning, head to the annual Mother Tongue Languages Symposium (MTLS) 2017. This year’s event is themed “Flourish in the Wonderland of Our Languages”, with more interactive activities and surprises in store for you and your young ones. Here’s what you can expect.

1. LEARN FROM EXPERTS AND PARENTS

At MTLS 2017, you’ll get the chance to discuss research on the importance and advantages of learning MTL with local and international education experts. You’ll also hear the views of celebrity parent speakers like Zoe Tay, Zaza Majid and Puravalan Narayanasamy. In addition, there will be a Forum Theatre Workshop, where you’ll get to participate in discussions, share ideas with fellow parents, and co-create meaningful activities to support Junior’s learning at home. Register online to book a slot.

2. ENGAGE WITH THE COMMUNITY

Community support makes a difference in a child’s ability to learn MTL. MTLS 2017 features exhibition booths, set up by preschool centres, schools and community partners, so that parents and educators can explore fun and innovative ways of nurturing Junior’s love of learning.

3. INCORPORATE PLAY IN LEARNING

Learning is faster and easier, particularly for kids, when the process is fun and engaging. That’s where elements of play come in. MTL Story Quest will introduce your kids to well-known Chinese, Malay and Indian folklore. They will embark on a fun-filled experiential journey and be immersed in the fictional world of stories. They will arrive at four exciting adventure zones – the mountain, the forest, the ocean and the sky – where they engage in activities to complete their quest and let their imagination take flight. They may even get to meet and interact with characters as they come alive from the stories.

4. MAKE A COMMITMENT AS A FAMILY

Doing things together as a family has been shown to increase and support a child’s learning ability. After all, kids love to follow what their parents and older siblings do. At MTLS 2017, you can commit to making learning MTL a family priority at the MTL Pledge Wall – We Will!.

5. DISCOVER MTL LEARNING RESOURCES

A wide range of selected MTL learning resources including books, CDs and picture cards will be on sale. Browse through recommended picks and specially produced books by community partners such as the Lee Kuan Yew Fund for Bilingualism. Illustrators and authors will also be present to interact with parents and children.
