THE NAIL MAESTROS

Over-the-top bejewelled nails are so passe. These new-gen manicurists nail super-chic, sophisticated designs that are, quite simply, works of art.

Heng Ying Ying, 32, director at The Nail Artelier

This may come as a shock to those who know first-hand how good Ying is at trendy, freehand designs and watercolour-style nail art: she doesn’t have an art background.

The former teacher (she taught for six years) was inspired by nail artists on social media and picked up nail art as a hobby. She eventually opened The Nail Artelier in 2013 with her business partner, Jenrine – the salon was reportedly one of the first here to offer nail art in gel manicure form.

Ying’s speciality: fashion-inspired nail art. Some of her clients bring her photos of clothing from designer labels such as Alexander McQueen, Balmain and Christian Louboutin, and ask for nail designs inspired by the apparel. No idea is too outlandish for Ying – “We don’t say no to crazy ideas; we try to bring them to life,” she says – though she does sometimes suggest toning down a flamboyant print, or pairing a design with subtle and chic colours.

The Nail Artelier is at 666 North Bridge Road (tel: 6298-8028).

Natsumi Iwamuro, 26, head nail artist at Kiyone+Lim

Popular Japanese nail art circa 2000 was cutesy, loud and garish (think tips blinged up with embellishments). Now though, more women are going for clean and sophisticated freehand designs that won’t look out of place at the office. Who’s on their speed dial? Manicurist Natsumi Iwamuro.

This petite lass is only 26, but is already the head nail artist at Kiyone+Lim, a hip local nail parlour opened by Less is More, a Japanese chain of salons. A manicure by this sought-after nail artisan can take up to three hours to complete. Why so long? Her chic and intricate illustrations are done freehand, and she mixes her own colours by combining two or three polishes – perfect if you’re after specific hues.

When tasked with geometric designs, her lines are fine and flawless. And she absolutely nails Pinterest-worthy tips that resemble dreamy, watercolour paintings.

Kiyone+Lim is at #02-21/23 Orchard Central (tel: 6834-3193).
