It’s coastal, it’s vintage and it’s cool again. Not to be confused with wicker, rattan is crafted from a particular type of palm tree. Here’s how to weave it into your existing home decor: Marble tissue box, $5.95 (pack of four), from The Better Company. Hexagonal marble board, $49, from Comme Home. French marble wine cooler, $49.95, from Crate & Barrel. Palma bedside table stool, $448, from Stylodeco. Stackable laundry basket, $79, from MUJI. Peel chair, $375, from Elements Concept. According to a study by the University of Arizona, that’s the number of bacteria per square inch on the average kitchen sponge! Sanitise your damp dishwashing sponges once a week by heating them in the microwave for one to two minutes.

1. Keep it fresh.

If you like the idea of rattan furniture but wonder how it will work in a contemporary or classic home, look for pieces in modern shapes and designs and team them with on-trend accessories.

2. Start small.

You might not be ready to invest in a statement item, so start with accent pieces like a storage box or side table. It’s a good way to test the style waters: If you like the way it looks, next time you’ll be ready to take a gutsier plunge with a woven bedhead or set of dining chairs!

3. Paint it.

The look and texture of rattan can be taken to another level with a coat of paint like yellow. It’s a great way to work this trend into a more modern room, or add colour to a neutral space.
