A historic tram depot has been transformed into an indoor pool bar that literally has a blue swimming pool complete with life saver-shaped cushions and a brass pool ladder as its centrepiece. Designed as a restaurant, bar, workspace and chill-out lounge, Kanarie Club opens up to several one-on-one meeting spaces, and its walls are lined with power outlets for charging laptops and phones on the go.

Healthy options on the menu include farmers’ yoghurt, spicy beef salad and veggie burgers, as well as more sinful pleasures such as Suikerbrood French toast and pancakes with whipped cream.

There are plenty of innovative options, favourites being Omelette Italiano on Turkish focaccia with radicchio, parmesan cheese, spinach and sundried tomato and veal cheek with ponzu and Japanese pancakes. But be sure to leave room for the pear clafoutis and chai tea crumble.

Interiors of wood, concrete and brick retain much of its predecessor’s industrial look with steel beams, lit railway signs and booth seating on the main floor. The Pool Bar on the mezzanine level is perfect for nights out Thursday, Friday and Saturday when the restaurant is packed with party-goers dancing to the beats of various DJs while imbibing colourful cocktails. www.kanarieclub.nl.
