Make over magic

This lucky Home & Decor reader won Urban Habitat Design’s home makeover contest, and fulfilled her dream of having an industrial–style home.

Homeowner Noor Lizrin Noraswad, her husband and three young children were traumatised by a bad experience with their previous contractor – they had paid him $15,000 to renovate their new Build-To-Order HDB flat in Woodlands, and couldn’t recover their money when he went bankrupt. Left with an incomplete home, the young family then entered a $20,000 home makeover contest offered by Urban Habitat Design in Home & Decor. They won after interior designers Johnny Huang and Justin Wong from Urban Habitat Design read their story, and decided to help them complete their living room and kitchen.

The living area is designed in an industrial style as requested by Lizrin; one element of which is the exposed black electrical trunking for the lights. A feature wall clad with brick veneer from Craftstone and woodlook vinyl tile flooring from Wood Culture add texture and a sense of cosiness to the space. To allow natural light into the home

without glare, black and white blinds from Azora were installed in the living room as well.

Furniture such as the Rope Me TV console and contemporary grey sofa from Hipvan are simple pieces that add to the industrial-rustic style of the space.

For the dining area, Johnny and Justin chose a rectangular wooden dining table and black industrial-style dining chairs from Hipvan. The wall, painted with chalkboard paint from Candy Paint, is also a creative space where the couple and their young children can doodle, or decorate with drawings for special occasions.

Extending the industrial style into the kitchen is the concrete countertop from Kompacplus, which is also a practical choice as it is waterproof and crack resistant, and white subway tiles from Gallery T for the backsplash. Lizrin highlights, “I like that the colour of the kitchen cabinet matches the white and brown tones in the home, giving the space a warm and cosy ambience. Creating the chalkboard in the dining area is also a brilliant idea as it always makes us feel as if we are dining in a cafe!”
