My Reading Room
PROJECT

Two-bedroom condominium apartment on Upper Changi Road

SIZE

830sqf

The extensive use of wood in this bachelor pad reflects the homeownerʼs love for the natural material. The different shades of brown — a combination of solid plywood and laminates was used — as well as the leather sofa and king-size bed create a warm and cosy resort ambience that the homeowner wanted.

Starry Homesteadʼs senior design consultant, Wu Xuling, took advantage of the living roomʼs high ceiling and constructed a loft, which increases the usable space within the apartment.

This design also accentuates the double volume space, while enhancing the laid-back resort vibe. Accessible via an open-riser staircase, porosity is maintained within a relatively small space. Black iron railings not only serve as a safety feature, but also inject an industrial edge. Downlights cast a warm, orange glow over the snug armchair and vantage point in the loft level, making the nook a perfect spot for the homeowner to relax and read.

Like the rest of the apartment, the master bedroom is dressed in brown hues. To maximise the efficiency of the space, the designer opted for sliding wardrobe doors with mirrored panels that create the illusion of space within the room.

The second bedroom is dedicated to the homeownerʼs pet cat, and houses a specially designed shelf for the feline to climb and rest on.

The designer has skilfully incorporated some surprises into the scheme. Peranakan tiles on the kitchen backsplash give it an old-world charm and make it an eye-catching feature, while Persian rugs in the living room and loft, alongside a retro-style chest of drawers in the second bedroom, add an eclectic mix to the interiors.

Despite the various mix of elements, Xuling managed to pull off the look of a cosy, holistic design for the home.
