This resort with a unique glamping concept has been drawing tourists from all over the world to its collection of trailers, tents and cabins located close to one of the most beautiful natural parks in the United States.
Located in Midpines, California, three hours from San Francisco and just a few kilometres from the exceptional Yosemite National Park, Autocamp Yosemite is the result of a collaboration between design studios Anacapa Architecture and Geremia Design. Occupying a 14-hectare-lot in the Sierra Nevada region, the property offers all the services and amenities of a boutique hotel. Guests can choose between several options for accommodations: 81 Airstream trailers, 15 luxury tents, five cabins and 10 suites (including five designed by M-Rad Architecture).
The starting point of the resort’s design was the renowned Airstream (an American brand of travel trailers known for their rounded and polished aluminium coachwork, which date back to the 1930s). The Anacapa Architecture team developed an architectural language to complement the iconic caravan’s timeless style.
AutoCamp Yosemite also has a 370-square-metre clubhouse with two levels. On the ground f loor, which also hosts the lobby, a lounge can be completely opened up to the exterior thanks to f loor-to-ceiling sliding windows. The fireplace creates a cosy atmosphere and the comfortable seats invite guests to take a look at the vintage books from the library. The upper level is home to a terrace, meeting rooms and an outdoor pool.
The pure lines of the architecture balance with the surrounding landscape, which was the main source of inspiration for the use of raw materials. The earthy tones also echo the natural context.
A Chambers Art & Design installation, textiles handmade in Chile by Treko, moon shaped concrete sculptures by artist Bronsen in every Airstream, historic photographs from the Yosemite area, a piece by lighting designer Rosie Li, a Workstead ceiling lamp, a Brendan Ravenhill installation, Crump & Kwash stools and Ben & Aja Blanc tables, are just some of the many design and art pieces that adorn the spaces.
Among the objectives of this unique hotel — which pays tribute to the beauty of Yosemite — are connecting the interiors and exteriors, as well as people with nature. Solar panels and a water treatment system illustrate the importance of sustainability in this project where everything was made to create experiences in line with the spirit and tradition of camping, but with all the modern comforts.
