For one balmy day in May, all eyes were on Havana as the Cuban capital hosted its first global fashion event: Chanel’s cruise 2017 runway show. A cacophony of music and horns from 170 candy-coloured vintage convertibles signalled the arrival of 600 guests from all over the world. Paseo del Prado, the city’s iconic 170m-long tiled promenade flanked by colourful mansions, was crammed with locals keen to catch the action on the world’s longest catwalk. Karl Lagerfeld presented Chanel tweeds reinterpreted with Cuban exuberance; a spin on the guayabera white shirts that are de rigueur to Havana; and the “Cuban tux,” seen on Stella Tennant and cigar-smoking male models alike. The carnival atmosphere carried on to the after party at Plaza de la Catedral, where frozen mojitos flowed freely and French actress Cécile Cassel tangoed the night away with Karl Lagerfeld to the euphonic rhythms of a Cuban band.
