This contemporary-style, two- bedroom studio penthouse off Jervois Road is home to a couple in their 30s. They approached Kelvin Bing, design director of Renaissance Planners & Designers, with a clear brief: As they love entertaining guests, having lots of storage space to keep the home spacious was a must.

To create a large living room and entertainment space, the original false ceiling was stripped bare to achieve a loft effect. Taking advantage of this double-volume height, Kelvin designed an impressive floor-to-ceiling display shelf that works as an eye-catching feature in the living room. Charcoal oak wood panels next to it hide storage space, while adding a sense of luxury.

In the dining room, Alcantra – a suede-like fabric finish – is used to clad the doors of the storage cabinets, while adding a textural effect that complements the wood finishes in the home. A customised pendant light from Belgium illuminates the space, and creates a visual spectacle with its multiple exposed bulbs.

Leading seamlessly from the dining area, the open-concept kitchen gives the homeowners more space to mingle during gatherings. For a contrast against the grey kitchen island countertop from Caesarstone, Brazilian solid wood is used for the cabinet handles. Storage space extends to the bedroom as well, with headboards that can be opened. When closed, they are disguised as sleek white panels.

As part of the $150,000 renovation, furniture throughout the home – including the dining set and rug, coffee table, and sofa in the living room – were customised by the design team at Renaissance Planners & Designers, and manufactured in Indonesia. This resulted in a cohesive look that creates a sense of harmony, sophisticated style and modernity.

For the homeowners, this abode is an ideal space in which they look forward to hosting their friends during the festive season. Visit Renaissance Planners & Designers at #01-02, 469 MacPherson Road, tel: 6291-1545, or http://www.renaidesigngroup.com for more projects.
