My Reading Room

ASIA-PACIFIC BOATING has long focused on the luxury side of yachting, but we’re also aware that not everyone has the wealth to pick and choose their next superyacht.

So, for those who think the whole lifestyle is out of reach, we’ve compiled a selection of boats in four price categories, starting from under US$50,000 to under US$200,000 – and that includes delivery to Asia.

APB has asked boatyards and dealers to ensure the price includes a ‘well optioned’ boat (yes, an engine would be nice) and estimated transport costs to Hong Kong, for consistency’s sake. As for the price ranges, readers should also bear in mind any relevant taxes in their country and that currencies fluctuate.

As such, the following pages are simply to highlight the fact that buying a topquality boat, if not a superyacht, is often more affordable than many realise.

For detailed information, readers should contact dealers and/or builders in their respective markets for a full list of yachts and their options, as well as a detailed estimate of trucking and shipping costs.

Owners also need to consider ongoing fees like berthing, insurance, maintenance and licences. However, the fact is that owning a boat is within reach for many, even if it requires some form of financing or just pitching in with a few mates.

Beneteau Antares 7

With an overall length of 7.5m and a beam of 2.5m, the Antares 7 can be towed and is a reliable boat designed for short coastal cruises, with a head and forward cabin. The wheelhouse is surrounded by windows and has a 360-degree view of the sea, while a sliding glass hatch on the roof bathes the interior in natural light. The innovative flared hull improves safety and seakeeping.

Redesigned in 2016 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Antares range, this outboard motorboat is packed with clever options. The cockpit table can drop to form a large sunpad, while inside, the portside table can do the same to provide a daybed or berth. An aft platform with a removable ladder provides access to the sea and this is closed off by a small gate when the boat is underway.

Beneteau Flyer 7.7 SPACEdeck

The Flyer 7.7 SPACEdeck is a roomy dayboat with the capacity for 10 people due in large to its open foredeck design, an alternative to the SUNdeck version – with forward cabin and sunpad – and the colourful SPORTdeck option. Features include a bathing platform with built-in telescopic ladder and an aft sofa that has storage and a built-in cooler, and can also fold down to make a sunpad. The sofa in front of the helm has lockers, a fridge and sea toilet, while the forward seating can convert into a sunbed.

The Flyer series ranges from 5.5m to 8.8m and all models feature the Air Step hull, which creates an ‘air cushion’ effect aft, designed for greater acceleration and speed, improved turning, increased seaworthiness and greater fuel efficiency.

The 20ft 6in boat can seat up to nine and benefits from Glastron’s renowned SSV (Super Stable Vee) hull, which is quick to plane and tracks well in the turns.

Owners can choose from a range of Mercruiser and Volvo engines, a crimson red or jet black colour scheme, while a wakeboard tower is among the many options. Glastron, which produces sterndrive, outboard and jet drive models, was one of four US brands bought by Beneteau Group in 2014 and is managed in Asia-Pacific under the Jeanneau division.

Scarab 165 HO Impulse

A jet boat with plenty of attitude, the Rotax-powered Scarab also looks the part with a menacing profile and a roar from the 250hp jet power plant to accompany it. The angular underwater profile (21 degrees deadrise) is aimed at carving sharp turns when the skier is hanging off the back and with five seats there’s plenty room for friends and a dedicated spotter.

Other good features of the 165 include a deep hull locker for ski gear and a wide swim platform for easy take-offs. A Beneteau-owned company since 2014, Scarab continues to benefit from the R&D power of its new French owner.

Sea Ray SPX 210

Sea Ray’s 21ft SPX 210 is a utility dayboat and fun bow rider with enough seating to host family and friends, while the 200hp petrol Mercruiser will pull all the water toys along with ease. The deck layout has seating that converts to a sunpad and there’s storage for skis plus a cooler box for drinks.

For the water toys, there’s a ski pole and a more powerful 250hp upgrade option for the Mercruiser. A sleek transom layout guides you to the wide swim platform, which includes a boarding ladder, completing a neat package overall. The SPX 210 is small enough to be towed to your favourite waters courtesy of the optional dual-axle trailer and a model was shipped to Sea Ray’s Hong Kong dealer earlier this year.

Beneteau Antares 8

Beneteau’s Antares 8 was launched with the Antares 7 last year and is also designed for coastal cruising, but with the capacity for longer journeys. As well as being well over 2ft longer than her smaller sister, it’s almost a foot wider. The forward double cabin is more enclosed, with a partition between the portside seating and toilet with sink. You can shower in the cockpit, if you’re considering multi-day trips.

It generally boasts the same overall package, including the L-shaped seating area in the cockpit that can become a large sunpad. Accessed by sliding glass doors, the well lit wheelhouse with sliding glass hatch has a similar portside dining area that can convert to a flatbed, while the helm seat can pivot forward to increase space for the starboard galley with optional stove and fridge. Has double the water capacity of the Antares 7 and a 280-litre fuel tank.

Four Winns HD 240 RS

The Four Winns HD 240 RS is a powerful wakeboard or waterskiing boat that’s also available in an Outboard (OB) version. When fitted with a VP V8 350hp engine, this US-built speedster can reach over 45 knots and has a handy range of 130nm at cruising speed. With an 8ft 5in beam, the boat has seating for 11 people and capacity for 13, so it’s good for large groups wanting a fun day out and for skiers or boarders looking for a proper audience.

The HD range also includes 220 and 270 models (both with OB option) and is one of the builder’s four series alongside Horizon (1835ft), TS (22-24ft) and Vista (25-37ft). Four Winns was one of four American small-boat brands bought by the Beneteau Group in 2014.

Beneteau Barracuda 8

The first model to use Beneteau’s Air Step 2 technology hull, the Barracuda 8 is a powerful, seaworthy fishing boat with a forward double berth. The boat is a legacy of the annual Barracuda Tour fishing competitions and equipment includes six rod holders and a live bait well, while a large starboard walkway makes it easy to move about.

Available with or without a flybridge, the two-side door version features a three-person seat, concealing a small galley. The three-door version has a three-leafed glazed door to stern, with the galley space opposite a foldaway portside seat. The modular cockpit offers options including a fishing station or a sliding seat that enables multiple configurations. The Barracuda line was launched in 2011 and has proved hugely popular in this region, with over a dozen models sold into North Asia and half-a-dozen into Southeast Asia.

This spacious bow rider is all about comfort and socialising, as it features lots of flat spaces to relax and chill out on, from the flared bow and converting helm seats to the large swim platform and the articulating aft lounger, a transom sunpad that can be lifted to curve into your desired position.

However, you can also put the throttle down on this 27-footer and hit some serious speed with the Mercury outboard – 250hp is the standard, with options to upgrade to 300hp or 350hp. With a capacity for 15 people and a large bimini, the SDX 270 OB can be a social boat, no matter what the weather, and there’s an articulating bimini for even more comfort and an enclosed head. Beneteau Oceanis 35.1

Beneteau’s Oceanis range continues reinventing itself to appeal to a wider audience and the new Oceanis 35.1 epitomises this approach with a revamp of this Finot-Conq hull originally launched in 2015. The main changes to this twin-rudder cruiser is the sail plan moved aft, to balance the boat better, plus inside, where in addition to the longitudinal galley there is a now an L-shaped galley on the port side.

Also, the chart table now folds away to increase lounging space in port. What continues is the voluminous interior that has two large double cabins or one owner’s and two smaller doubles. On deck the GRP continues to be a useful mainsheet track with bimini attachment.

Chris Craft Capri 21

Chris Craft, the US brand that inspired the iconic Rivas of the 1960s, has long been recognised globally for its beautiful designs. The familiar vertical bow design of the Capri 21 is a modern interpretation of the 1930s runabouts that defined the timeless style of a company founded in 1874 and whose boats have been sold to the likes of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and President Franklin Roosevelt.

The long teak-covered bow, generous Captain’s chairs and seating for five make it a classy first family boat or a pleasure craft for blasting around the bay and water sports. High-quality marine vinyl and custom fabrics are selected for Chris Craft interiors and the Capri 21 offers a wide range of options and combinations, enabling you to customise your own elegant speedster with retro appeal.

Jeanneau Merry Fisher 895

An ideal starter boat? Merry Fisher is Europe’s best-selling range of cabin cruisers, with Jeanneau building more than 1,000 units of the seven models (6-9m) in 2016. The flagship 895 launched at Cannes last year, showed at this year’s Singapore Yacht Show and is available for about HK$1 million including delivery to Asia. However, it’s so popular that it’s sold out until late 2017, with at least two hulls sold to Thailand.

In an 8m hull, this pocket cruiser packs an outdoor cockpit, foredeck seating, a bright saloon with a galley and dinette that converts to a sunbed, two downstairs cabins, a toilet with shower – and it also has the option of being used for fishing. As well as delivering a top speed of 38 knots, the twin outboards offer an economical solution as cheap maintenance is available even in Asia’s remote cruising areas.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 349

A deservedly popular boat that sails beautifully, Jeanneau’s Sun Odyssey 349 has been described as the world’s best-selling cruising sailboat, with 500 units built since its launch in 2015. On deck, there are twin helms and a spacious cockpit, with controls at the binnacles for the simple sail plan and an in-mast reefing mainsail for easy handling.

Below decks there can be two or three cabins and the saloon layout packs plenty in, even for a modern 33-footer, with longitudinal lounge and dinette benches forward, L-shaped galley starboard with navigation station opposite, adjoining the bathroom. Experienced designer Marc Lombard has given the 349 twin rudders to balance the wide hull. Boat Lagoon Yachting staged the model’s Asia premiere at this year’s Singapore Yacht Show.

Bavaria S30 Open

The deep hull of the sporty new Bavaria 30 Open packs a lot into its 30 feet, mainly due to its tall topsides, clever use of deck space and a smart hull design in stable sandwich construction. Key features include the petrol Mercruiser inboard while inside there is a double cabin plus a convertible dinette that becomes a double bed with enclosed bathroom.

The Mercruiser is a sporty engine with a top speed of 44 knots, so ideal for pulling some water toys, especially with the large teak swim platform to perch on. On deck, there’s also a wet bar beside the aft dining area, while broad gunwales, handrails and a railing from bow to stern provide safer footing. For day use, the forward berth transforms into a lounge area, thanks to the wide bow, with retractable table for dining. Sea Ray SLX 280

Sea Ray’s SLX range offers a higher standard of finish than its other marques, combined with more performance. The 350hp Mercruiser on the 280 won’t be straining as you hit 44 knots, but there’s also 380hp and 430hp options for the skiing brigade. On deck the sculpted seats and deep-set cockpit will protect the occupants behind the windshield or the kids might enjoy the thrill and bumps of bow riding up front.

The SLX range also benefits from quietRIDE technology, which is a vibration-dampening material laminated throughout to soften and quieten the ride. Extensive seating throughout, including the aft sunpad, means there’s enough room for 12 or more on the 280, plus many accessories including air compressors and other fixtures that can run off the inboard engine. Also, there’s a spacious enclosed head compartment with portable toilet. An SLX 280 was recently headed to South Korea.

The new owner will use the Wellcraft as a supporting and fishing vessel that accompanies his larger luxury yacht.

The 262 Center Console is ideal for easy access to fishing spots, nearby beaches for water activities and fast transfers, as she can race over 50 knots powered by twin engines (Mercury, Yamaha or Evinrude). Features include rod holders, gunnel mount, self-bailing cockpit, enclosed head and a dive door. Wellcraft was founded in 1955 and is one of four US small-boat brands owned by Beneteau Group.
