What makes for a champion watch strap? For Roger Dubuis, it’s when the material has proven its toughness, which is why the avant garde watchmaker has teamed up with Pirelli, Formula 1’s sole tyre supplier, to use the rubber inlays from cars that have won Grand Prix races. Unveiled at this year’s Salon International De La Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, the Excalibur Spider Pirelli – Double Flying Tourbillon features speedometer-like seconds counters and automobile-inspired pointers. Other racing motifs include multi-coloured power-reserve indicators, which are a nod to race-car cockpit fuel gauges, and tread motifs reminiscent of Pirelli’s classic Cinturato tyre. After witnessing the thoughtless disposal of waste during renovation works in his time as an interior designer, Jackie Tan started Triple Eyelid to salvage discarded materials and incorporate them into environmentally sustainable designs. You don’t have to be an aviation aficionado to appreciate The Cowling. Not only does it resemble the cult egg chair, it is fashioned from a Boeing 737 plane engine. Designed by Fallen Furniture, a British company that repurposes aircraft parts, the chair measures 2m in diameter and is padded with black leather.
