This season’s New Cool is extraordinarily ordinary, says Senior Fashion Editor Windy Aulia.
Fashion is currently enjoying a huge resurgence of the everyday. Looking mundane is suddenly oh-so-chic. And we have one man to thank— fashion’s au courant disruptor of choice. Vetements designer Demna Gvasalia, previously from Maison Martin Margiela and now at the revered house of Balenciaga, has cemented the notion that style starts from the street. His rendition of exaggerated shapes on nerdy-chic outfits with a rebellious streak is culled straight from the youth of his native post-war Georgia. Coupled with his currency of cool, it’s a formula that has brought a breath of fresh air to fashion. Think Nancy Spungen meets Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman, so opt for a leather jacket with oversized buckle details (10) and pair it with platform boots (7). Borrow a shirt from the boys for layering, tying it around the waist or leaving it nonchalantly unbuttoned. Prints should be kept minimal, while colours, sinfully cardinal. Bags don’t have to be the focus but it’s the little trinkets (2) or a chunky cuff (6) that are modern updates—especially when they are in abundance... A ladylike skirt (3) gives the ensemble an off-kilter edge and this is the anchor of what fashion is today. No matter what you add, edit or change, a hint of ladylike sophistication goes a long way.
