“She’s the only reason I’m able to do what I do,” said the newly crowned Best Actor of his mum at this year’s Academy Awards. Leonardo Dicaprio, 41, is renowned for his playboy ways, but when it comes to his heart, there’s only one woman who has him wrapped around her little finger – his 73-year-old mum, Irmelin. She’s been his “plus one” at various award ceremonies and on set over the years. From his days as a teen actor to the premiere of his first hit movie What’s Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993.

Friends say Leo wants to give back to the lady to whom he owes his career – and he’s not letting other women get in the way. Despite his busy filming and dating schedules, Leo makes time for his mum, once taking her on a date to the British Science museum and buying her a Chanel bag which costs over $16,000.

“She supported this 12-year-old little kid who said, ‘I want to be an actor’, and she drove me to all these auditions,” he said in his touching tribute on stage, “This woman drove me three hours a day to a different school to show me a different opportunity. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be standing up here.”
