LCD TVs have come a long way with Ultra High-Definition 4K TVs a standard feature and High Dynamic Range (HDR) being the next big thing. However, while panel technologies have grown leaps and bounds, there has been little improvement to backlighting.

All modern LCD TVs make use of an array of LED backlights to illuminate all those pixels that make up the image you see on your TV. Some are edge lit, where LEDs are placed along the sides of the screen. Some feature a full array of LEDs at the back of the panel. But whichever the design, all LCD TVs have an inherent problem of the LED backlights leaking across the screen causing patches of uneven brightness and dark tones that are always more grey than black.

Sony’s Backlight Master Drive™ is the first real step to revolutionise LED backlight technology and has even won the coveted Editor’s Choice Innovation Award at the 2017 HWM+HardwareZone.com Tech Awards.

In simpler terms, Backlight Master Drive is a full-array local dimming system taken to another level. It employs a denser LED structure compared to other backlight systems, and is able to discretely control each LED, as opposed to the usual way of controlling LEDs in a group or zonal arrangement. Backlight Master Drive LEDs also have a unique optical structure that focuses each LED to prevent leaking.

The result is one of the most advanced 4K HDR TVs ever made. The Sony BRAVIA™ Z9D with Backlight Master Drive is by far the best TV you can get for 4K HDR viewing, capable of incredible brightness with crystal clear distinction between vivid lights and the darkest blacks. No other LCD TV technology comes close.

01 Incredible Brilliance

A lot can be said about full-array local dimming and ultra-dense LEDs, but all you need to know is that the breakthrough Backlight Master Drive powers the brightest LED TV today, the BRAVIA Z9D. And this is important to push the boundaries of 4K HDR.

02 Total Lighting

Control Brightness is impressive, but Sony proved Backlight Master Drive is the real game changer as the first to offer discrete control over every single LED, bringing the BRAVIA Z9D as close to per pixel-level illumination as you can ever get.

03 Laser-like Focus

Another reason why Backlight Master Drive is so innovative is due to its calibrated beam LED design that focuses light so each LED is more like a laser than a flashlight, delivering a level of clarity between light and dark areas never before possible on conventional LED TVs.

04 Intelligent Image Quality

The precision lighting of Backlight Master Drive also enables the BRAVIA Z9D to apply Object-Based HDR Remastering, where the contrast of individual objects on the screen can be adjusted independently for greater depth and more realistic pictures.
