From choosing the right preschool to managing behavioural problems, there was lots to learn at our recent Preschool Seminar.

How do you make the most of your child’s precious preschool years? Mums and dads picked up expert tips on a variety of topics at the Young Parents Preschool Seminar 2016, which was held on Aug 20 at the Sheraton Towers Singapore Hotel.

Participants also found out more about Chiltern House, Lorna Whiston and Heguru Method Learning Centre at the exhibitor booths during the event, and went home with fabulous goodie bags. Here are some of the highlights.

1 Fiona Walker, group managing director of Chiltern House Preschool, shared her advice on helping your kid make a successful transition to preschool. Organise play dates for your tot, so he’ll learn to socialise early, and expose him to positive new experiences so he’ll look forward to starting school, she suggested.

2 Gadgets may be a part of everyday life now, but they can bring on a host of problems for kids – including stunting their vocabulary, Helen Marjan, CEO of Lorna Whiston Schools, pointed out. Ignite your child’s passion for reading by making it a habit that you enjoy together, and make books come alive by talking about the characters.

3 Boost your little one’s brain power with fun activities. Agnes Ng, principal of Heguru Method Learning Centre, suggested memory games, such as remembering a shopping list by turning it into a story.

Develop Junior’s hand-eye coordination with activities that involve crossing the mid-line – for instance, using his left hand to touch his right leg. The seminar also included presentations by Dr Geraldine Teo-Zuzuarte, group professional practices officer of NTUC First Campus, and Geraldine Tan, director and principal psychologist of The Therapy Room.
