Are you disinterested in sex because it’s painful? You may be suffering from vaginal atrophy, which is the thinning, drying and inflammation of the vaginal walls due to a lack of the estrogen hormone. Vaginal atrophy mostly occurs after menopause, but it can also develop during breastfeeding or when your body drops short of estrogen.

Vaginal atrophy can make intercourse painful, and this in turn makes you less interested in sex. In addition, you may experience itching, light bleeding and more vaginal discharge.

If vaginal atrophy is affecting your health and self-esteem, then here’s some really great news. MonaLisa Touch is the most advanced laser procedure specifically developed for people suffering from vaginal atrophy. It is the first to be approved by the international medical community, US FDA and Health Canada.

How does MonaLisa Touch ® ® works? The procedure is relatively pain-free and is designed to help rebuild the vaginal tissue and reduce menopausal-related symptoms. It typically takes one to three sessions to make intercourse more comfortable.

Ask the doctor

Dr Choo Wan Ling, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at SOG – Choo Wan Ling Clinic for Women, explains what vaginal atrophy is about:

Does vaginal atrophy affect only menopausal women?

Dr Choo Wan Ling: “Vaginal atrophy generally affects menopausal women. However, in conditions where the female hormone, estrogen, is low for a prolonged period, such as during breastfeeding, the vagina can be very dry. Women who are on medication to suppress estrogen because of estrogen-related cancers like breast or ovarian cancer, and endometriosis may experience vaginal atrophy too.”

Are there treatments to treat vaginal atrophy?

Dr Choo: “The main treatment for vaginal atrophy is hormonal therapy by applying a hormonal cream in the vaginal area once or twice weekly. But the applications have to continue in order for the effects to last. It is not suitable for women who have a history of estrogensensitive cancers.”

Do laser treatments damage the vaginal tissues or overall health?

Dr Choo: “There are no known risks to the patient’s health when using laser therapy to rejuvenate the vaginal epithelium.
