Your special occasion family group shot is good, but when you want to capture everyone in a special way, putting the camera on remote may not get the effect you’re after. That’s when you’ll be thinking of organising a trip to a professional photographer’s, something more families are doing to capture special moments in their lives.

Mother-of-two Jasmine Chong wanted to visually document her family while her children Dylan, two and a half years old, and Emmy, 15 months old, were “at this precious stage of life”. She shares, “They’ll never be this small again.” Through word of mouth, Jasmine found out about Jonah Sun, principal photographer from All Aflutter. “I saw some family photos, shared by an ex-colleague, that Jonah had shot, and I liked his style. I believe in choosing a photographer whose vision and aesthetic are aligned with mine, and then I leave it to him to work his magic!”

We caught up with All Aflutter’s Jonah and asked him for some pointers on getting that perfect family portrait.

Experience matters

“Pick a photographer that has a style that suits your tastes. Carefully look through his or her body of work specifically for family portraits, because not all photographers are good in every area,” says Jonah.

Do you have chemistry?

“A great photographer will know how to engage with you and your family members to bring out your best smiles. This chemistry can sometimes make or break a photograph.”

Location, location, location

Jonah adds, “Choosing a good location can make a great difference between a good and great session. I often recommend open spaces with lots of greenery because not only are we able to capture a variety of shots, natural light also brings out natural expressions better.”

What to wear?

“Having a co-ordinated style will elevate the look and feel of the family portrait. Try dressing everyone in a similar colour palette. You’ll be surprised at what an impact this makes.”

Working with kids

“Schedule the shoot for a time when you know your little ones will be more likely to cooperate. The last thing you want is to have them cranky and crying.” advises Jonah. W
