WHAT’S SO SPECIAL?

It has all the usual attachments – smoothing and styling nozzles, plus a diffuser for volume – but the Dyson Supersonic does not look like other hairdryers with its hollow, cylindrical head.

WHAT I LIKED.

• The range of heat settings Choose between 28 deg C, 60 deg C, 80 deg C and 100 deg C. My scalp is sensitive to heat, and I found the lowest setting cool enough to use without compromising on efficiency. The highest was far too hot for me.

• The powerful fan (non-heated) Even the lowest setting was strong – and equivalent to medium or high on other hairdryers. It took 10min to dry my shoulder-length hair, which was faster than the time taken with my usual hairdryer.

• It was gentle on hair I’ve lived with split ends and kinks in my hair for years. My hair ends became less problematic after I started using the Dyson Supersonic.

• It doesn’t trap hair I’ve had hair caught in hairdryer vents before, but not with this doughnut-shaped barrel.

• It was safe to touch Even after using it non-stop for 15min, it was just warm to hold; never hot.

• It was lightweight And better balanced than many other hairdryers. With the weight on the handle and not the barrel, my arms didn’t ache from holding on to it – even after 10min.

WHAT COULD BE BETTER.

The Cool Shot button Hairstylists say that a blast of cold air at the end of the drying session helps close hair follicles, so your tresses are less prone to damage. It was tiring to hold down the Supersonic’s awkwardly placed button. An on/off switch would have worked better.

VERDICT The Dyson Supersonic is less about bells and whistles, and more about optimising each basic hairdryer function. It’s pricey but could be worth it if the end result is less damaged hair.
