“No matter how much cushioning a pair of trainers have, you still need proper workout socks to avoid injury. Invest in a good pair and you will feel a lot more comfortable. It’s a good idea to bring along your socks when you’re buying a new pair of shoes.”

DAWN CHEN, 25, Shape writer

“Laces are often overlooked. When choosing shoes, pay attention to the elasticity and length of the laces. The right ones would lock perfectly and provide the security you need for a comfortable run.”

LANA NGUYEN, 27, Shape designer

“Always trust your first instinct when buying shoes. If something doesn’t feel right when you put them on, that pair is probably not for you.”

CLAIRE ANG, 20, Shape freelancer

“Never buy a pair of shoes without first trying them on. The cut and sizing varies among models, even under the same brand. And don’t just wear the shoes. Jog on the spot and jump in them. They should feel comfy right away!”

ESTELLE LOW, 29, Shape writer

“Always get your running gait tested first. This allows you to find out if you have neutral feet or those that under-or overpronate. With this information, you can get the right shoes. This is useful even if you haven’t had any running injuries before, and is especially important if you are planning to run long-distance. I got my running gait checked only after feeling pain while running, and found that my overpronation needed to be corrected with insoles.”
