Wellness centre Como Shambhala Urban Escape recently launched a range of holistic programmes to help active clients improve their sports performance while treating existing injuries and preventing future ones.
There are four tailored sports recovery packages available, and I had the opportunity to experience a Recovery Package based on my needs at that time.
I was running regularly and had sustained a posterior tibial tendon injury (this is the tendon that connects the calf muscle to bones on the inner foot).
The package was designed for those suffering from a sports injury that was disrupting their normal training routine.
It included a consultation with sports nutritionist Eve Persak, a treatment by resident acupuncturist Mark Chern, and a pilates lesson with senior teacher Fhe Samia. All sessions were done one-on-one.
THE EXPERIENCE
Eve examined my diet closely, and it became clear that I wasn’t eating enough protein and complex carbohydrates to support running thrice weekly. She also looked at decreasing my high sugar intake by suggesting healthier snack options such as smoothie popsicles.
Mark did soft tissue work and trigger point therapy around the injured areas.
There was significant relief in my calves and feet after the session.
Lastly, pilates with Fhe made me more aware of my bad posture – I tend to slouch. Good body alignment is important as a runner.
