Fermentation can turn a skincare ingredient into a more potent version for better results.
Innisfree’s Soybean Energy range Following the popularity of its best-selling Soybean Energy Essence in 2013, Innisfree has expanded its anti-ageing Soybean Energy range (said to improve skin firmness and radiance); it now has six additional items, including an oil, a lotion and a neck cream.

All have concentrated soybean extract (fermented for 300 days to reach its full efficacy) and oil from South Korea’s Jeju Island. The fermentation process apparently increases the concentration of antioxidants and breaks down complex molecules, making the product more readily absorbed by the skin. The range has a pleasant herbal scent (except the Essence, which is odourless). Expect a smoother, plumper and glowing visage after a week’s use.

La Mer The Revitalizing Hydrating Serum

This lightweight serum has La Mer’s signature Miracle Broth – a fermented complex of sea kelp and other essential nutrients – along with a new fermented blend of green, brown and red algae. Together, these ingredients deliver intense hydration to the skin instantly, while continuing to work throughout the day by locking in moisture. The claim: expression lines become significantly less obvious just minutes after applying a thin layer of the serum on dry, stressed skin. Look forward, too, to smoother, suppler skin.
