BEST GROCERIES CARD
CITIBANK SMRT CARD
Why we love it:
• Rebates of up to 7 percent for grocery shopping
• More cashback at cafes like Starbucks, or The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
This card is designed especially for train commuters, who can earn SMRT$ and use these for free rides and vouchers. It’s also great for groceries. When you shop at Fairprice, Giant and Sheng Siong, you get back 2 percent in Citi rebates, and 5 percent in SMRT$ – a total of 7 percent in rebates. Bonus: It’s great for coffee lovers. At places like Starbucks and The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, you can get a 10 percent rebate from Citi, and 5 percent in SMRT$. The caffeine boost will give you a burst of energy to lug those groceries home.
BEST DEPARTMENT STORE CARD
OCBC ROBINSONS GROUP CREDIT CARD
Why we love it:
• Free weekend parking at selected malls
• 10 percent rebate at selected retailers
We like how cardholders enjoy free weekend parking at The Heeren, Jem and Raffles City Shopping Centre (because these places house Robinsons and Marks & Spencer stores). And payment for items costing $500 and above at Robinsons, Marks & Spencer and John Little can be made in six- or 12-month instalments, at 0 percent interest. You also get a 5 percent rebate on spending of up to $5,000, and 10 percent for any amount beyond that at these three retailers from Jan 1 to June 30, and from July 1 to Dec 31, 2016. At non-participating retailers, cardholders get one Robs$ for every $2 spent. Redeem 200 Robs$ for $1 off at Robinsons, Marks & Spencer or John Little, and 4,800 Robs$ for $30 off at these stores.
BEST FAMILY CARD
POSB EVERYDAY CARD
Why we love it:
• It’s a credit card, ATM card and EZ-link card rolled into one
• Rebates at a wide range of participating retailers
This is the most versatile credit card on the market. For starters, it is a credit card, ATM card and EZ-link card all in one, letting you access your bank and credit account with a single PIN. You also get cashback on typical household expenses – there’s a 5 percent cash rebate at Sheng Siong, a 3 percent rebate at Watsons and 20.1 percent off petrol at SPC. If it’s not on the list, you still get 0.3 percent. One interesting feature is that you can also enjoy a 1 percent rebate on recurring utility bills (from Singapore Power, for example). This card may not be as spectacular as the others in any one category, but it’s the best all-rounder. If you only want one card, get this.
BEST PETROL CARD
CITI CASH BACK CARD
Why we love it:
• 8 per cent rebate, up to $25 a month, for petrol
• Discounts of more than 20 percent at Esso and Shell
This is a good cashback card in general, but it wins in this category because its petrol discounts are the best. It gives you 8 percent cashback on petrol, groceries and dining with a retail spend of at least $888 a month (the cashback is capped at $25 for each category). In addition, you get a 20.88 percent discount at Esso, and 20.8 percent discount at Shell. A calculator is available on the Citibank website, but for simplicity’s sake, assuming you spend about $900 a month ($300 on petrol, $200 on groceries, and $400 on dining), you would get about $66 in cashback.
