My Reading Room

Your first kiss, your first heartbreak, your first business win... long-forgotten memories can resurface at once with a whiff of  a scent.

Because smells and memories are so tightly entwined, French beauty house Guerlain takes the design of  its scents very seriously. Its perfumers know every last detail about each of  the house’s fragrances – from the source of  the raw ingredients to the people who grow them. To Guerlain, the end product is a culmination of  the relationships that were built in the process.

Contemporary femininity

Created by the house’s master perfumer Thierry Wasser, Mon Guerlain EDP ($208 for 100ml) is made for today’s multi-faceted woman who is intelligent yet modest, feminine yet strong. Its inspiration? “The choices, emotions and dreams that embody femininity,” shares Thierry.

The intriguing composition opens with the refreshing, enveloping notes of  rare French carla lavender and Papua New Guinea tahitensis vanilla, before revealing a feminine heart of  South Indian sambac jasmine. It then dries down to a warm, sensuous base of  Australian santalum album (sandalwood), which lends strength and mystery to the scent.

The fragrance is housed in the brand’s iconic Quadrilobe bottle, which combines sensual curves and taut lines for an understated graphic statement.

Inspirational icon

The face fronting Mon Guerlain is none other than actress Angelina Jolie – a strong icon for women worldwide whom Thierry feels is the embodiment of  “modern femininity”. This partnership began in 2015, when Angelina was still in Cambodia directing her fourth feature film, First They Killed My Father. Her affinity with the brand, though, started way before that – her late mother had for years treasured an iris-and-violet- scented Guerlain powder for its quality, elegance and femininity.

Unlike most ad campaigns, the star in the advertising film for the fragrance, Notes of  a Woman, is the scent’s creator rather than its face. Jointly produced by Angelina, it details the making of  a fragrance for women who are true to themselves.

All of  Angelina’s earnings from the Mon Guerlain campaign will be donated to charity, a gesture that comes as no surprise from the outspoken humanitarian and Special Envoy for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
