The winner of 2016’s Harper’s BAZAAR Asia NewGen Fashion Designer Award updates on life after the competition.

What did you gain most from the competition?
First, there’s the opportunity to further my studies at Istituto Marangoni; something that I’m looking forward to. Secondly, the competition gave me the exposure and the platform to show the world what I’m capable of. There’s also the valuable lesson of not giving up on what you believe in.
How has that prepared you for your career ahead?
You only see the rewards from your efforts when you refuse to quit. It’s never an easy path, but perseverance takes you far.
What continues to excite you about fashion design?
A world that keeps changing makes me excited. To me, fashion is beyond just clothes. It’s a movement that allows art, cultures and ideas to thrive. It’s exciting to be part of this change. I’m always eager to learn and explore new things. Fashion requires an open mind so that you can absorb as much as possible. This breadth and depth will eventually show in your work.
How can young designers like yourself hone your voice?
Knowing who you are and what you stand for really helps. Staying focused is also key. It’s great that there are so many initiatives that we can tap into. Having a mentor around to provide advice is extremely helpful too.
What do you hope to achieve?
Sustainability is really important to me. Of course, having more stockists and a loyal following around the world would be great.
