Anthony Vaccarello’s Saint Laurent has always been high on sex appeal, but this season, there was something new in the mix: Colour. Lots of it. Before this, Vaccarello had been one of the fiercest believers in the power of black. With fall/winter 2020, he embraced another one of Yves Saint Laurent’s greatest legacies: His era-defining mastery of colour. The collection Vaccarello showed riffed on the late designer’s oeuvre—chartreuse against aubergine, hot pinks alongside purples, emerald with lilac, and mustard worn with oxblood. Also new was his interpretation of sexy, with skin-baring silhouettes giving way to second-skin pieces in ultra-glossy latex. In sleek, shiny, scarlet patent leather offset by soft silk ribbons, these shoes sum up the strong and sultry femininity Vaccarello was going for.
