This 23-year-old Japanese arrived here four years ago to study printmaking at Lasalle College of The Arts. Along the way, she fell in love with – as she puts it – the side of Singapore that’s “not found in guide books”. It led this freelance artist to start her own Tumblr site (http://www.ayaka-katoh.tumblr.com), capturing everything from the abandoned homes along Old Airport Road to the now defunct Yangtze Cinema, which held the infamous honour of being the country’s last soft-porn picture house – all through the nostalgic filter of her Diana Mini camera. Remember: You read about her here first.

Wool sweater, cotton-blend maxi skirt, and Kisslock leather top-handle bag. Choker, Kato’s own.

“As a foreigner, everything here looks new to me. I feel that a lot of the locals do not know or care about the diversity and less glossy side of life here that is, in fact, really unique. Singapore’s not all about city living, which can get quite boring.”
