1 They’ve been around since 1958

The Smurfs were created by Belgian comic artist and writer Peyo, and first appeared as side characters in another fantasy comic.

2 The name was inspired by salt

Peyo had forgotten the word for "salt", so he made one up and asked for the “schtroumpf”. “Les Schtroumpfs” became the original name, and was later translated to "The Smurfs".

3 They can live for hundreds of years

Great Gadgets Grandpa Smurf once returned from a 500-year-long journey around the world.

4 They wear Phrygian caps

Otherwise known as liberty caps, Phrygian caps were worn by former slaves in ancient Rome to symbolise their freedom.

“I’m pretty smart with boys. I know how to handle them and I know what to do around them.” – Ariel Winter, who voices SmurfLily in the movie.
