5 Singaporean Musicians You Should Know

Be honest – how many other local musicians can you name besides The Sam Willows and Gentle Bones? Here are some other musical acts that prove Singapore’s got talent.

My Reading Room
Joshua Simon

Before you knew him as a Kiss92 DJ, Joshua Simon was already making some people sit up and listen with his covers and mega mixes on YouTube (psst – watch his “Milkshake” cover). Check out his latest single, “Murda”, if you haven’t already. It’s like Lady Gaga meets K-Pop meets Skrillex – and the end result is glorious. We can get turnt to that.

My Reading Room
Charlie Lim

The world could always use more soulful crooners, and singer-songwriter Charlie Lim makes for easy listening. If you’re into alternative pop or soft rock, his music style will be right up your alley. He just signed on to Universal Music Singapore a few months back, and is slated to release a new record sometime next year.

My Reading Room
Linying

Like lots of the new generation of homegrown musicians, Linying says she was just “one of those 15-year-olds who posted videos of covers”. A few years later, she’s sung on tracks by Felix Jaehn and Lost Frequencies, has signed on to Universal Music Singapore, and was chosen as one of CLEO’s Change Makers this year. Her music sounds like it could be used on Girls, so do yourself a favour and listen to her debut EP Paris 12!

My Reading Room
Disco Hue

The quintet might be young, but age is never a good measure for pure talent. This local indie electronic band feels very much like the first sip of water after a hot yoga class – light, refreshing, and utterly welcome. We are also madly in love with their kitschy aesthetics, especially their music video for the single, “I’ll Be Waiting”, which pays homage to Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Yeap, they’re definitely the cool kids in school that you wished you were friends with.

My Reading Room
MYRNE

Did you know that Diplo’s label, Mad Decent, signed on a Singaporean last year? And more impressively, that this talent here is a self-taught EDM musician? Manfred Lim, 21, who goes by the moniker MYRNE, pricked up the ears of Mad Decent’s creative director Paul Devro with his mixtape on SoundCloud, and history was made. He counts Baauer, and Major Lazer as label mates, so we’d say that he’s in very good company.

GEEKING OUT

Attention all geeks: here are all the movies you wouldn’t want to miss out this month.

My Reading Room
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

The Harry Potter film series may have long ended, but its legacy lives on, as most Potterheads would attest. As the first instalment of a trilogy, J.K. Rowling makes her screenwriting debut with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

The plot follows wizard Newt Scamander’s journey into 1920s New York and his quest to catch ‘em all – magical beasts in the wizarding world, that is.

Find his name familiar? That’s because he’s the author of the book that was to become the required text for all first-year Hogwarts students, including the original trio of Harry, Ron and Hermione.

Opens November 17, 2016.

My Reading Room
Doctor Strange

It’s been a little quiet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Captain America: Civil War, but that’s about to change when Doctor Strange drops.

Benedict Cumberbatch takes on the titular character, a famous neurosurgeon whose career was shattered by a car accident, thereby setting him on the path of healing and into the world of the mystic arts.

With Stan Lee’s stamp of approval, we can be sure to expect nothing less than pure awesomeness from this movie.

Opens November 3, 2016.
