Nature’s Colours

Chantecaille turns its conservation focus to the forest this season with the introduction of the Save the Forest Eye Shade Palette. Drawing attention to the gorilla, whose natural habitats in Congo and Uganda are fast disappearing due to deforestation, the palette features motif of the animal and four shades that are inspired by the Virunga National Park in Congo. Part of the proceeds will be donated to the Rainforest Alliance to support its work in protecting forests and wildlife. www.chantecaille.com

Marine Treasure

Gili Lankanfushi has launched a new marine biology centre, Gili Veshi, to support research on sustainability issues, while offering opportunities for guests to get involved in conservation initiatives. Guests can now take part in activities, including dives to check on new coral specimens, remove oceanic litter or eradicate the invasive crown of thorns starfish. For children, a range of tailor-made experiences such as treasure hunts are designed to educate them about the rich ecosystem. The centre’s research team also work with the Maldivian government and NGOs to monitor the marine environment and spearhead a new outreach initiative that focuses on the local community. www.gili-lankanfushi.com

A Green Stay

With sustainability at its heart it’s no wonder Alila Seminyak has been recognised with the EarthCheck Bronze status, which is one of the travel industry’s most scientifically rigorous environmental benchmarking programmes. It measures key indicators such as energy and water consumption, total waste production and community commitment, and the resort has aced these areas. In addition to the recent Alila Zero Waste to Landfill project, the property has adopted policies such as low-energy light fixtures, rainwater harvesting, environmental and building management systems, as well as initiatives that promote awareness in local communities. www.alilahotels.com
