The annual ShowBoats Design Awards honours the innovators and creative minds behind the most exceptional superyacht designs of the year. Focused entirely on design aspects, the awards recognised creative excellence across a range of eleven categories. Winners are chosen from a shortlist compiled by an independent panel of experts.

Nauta Design was awarded with the Exterior Design & Styling Award, the Interior Layout & Design Award and the Holistic Design Award for the work done on Nikata.

The fourth prize claimed by Nikata was the Naval Architecture Award given to Rolf Vrolijk of the highly respected Judel/Vrolijk & Co design office of Bremerhaven, responsible for the Naval Architecture of this thoroughbred yacht.

These four ShowBoats Design awards make Nikata the evening’s most winning design, as she was the only yacht to collect so many prestigious recognitions at the ceremony held in Kitzbühel.

CODECASA 65 FOCUSES ON SIMPLE ELEGANCE

My Reading Room

THE VIAREGGIO SHIPYARD has designed the new Codecasa 65-metre project with emphasis on class, elegance and luxury. As a symbol of refined aesthetic taste, the Italian brand chose the shiny metallic grey colour for the hull and superstructure, adding charm to the streamlined and simple lines of the yacht. It endeavours to show simple elegance instead of some stylistic extravagances.

The Codecasa 65 is distributed over four decks and features large windows, which brighten up the interiors. From a functional point of view, great attention was devoted to the exteriors with comfortable and spacious relaxation areas on all decks, in addition to a large swimming pool in the forward zone.

Codecasa Yachts offers an iconic exterior design combined with fully customisable interiors.

DOMINATOR’S ILUMEN REACHES 28 KNOTS

My Reading Room

DOMINATOR YACHTS SHONE LIGHT on its 26-metre motoryacht Ilumen after months of tests.

To keep hull motions under control, Ilumen has a Seakeeper gyro stabiliser combined with the Humphree advanced vessel control system that uses interceptors mounted on the transom to control both pitching and rolling. The bulbous bow is designed to help smooth the ride in waves and a pronounced chine is designed to keep the spray firmly under control.

The hull of the Ilumen is based on a hard chine design with a moderate V incorporating a finely shaped bulbous bow combined with a hook at the stern. Dominator has used foam sandwich construction throughout to combine high strength with light weight.

Available with two engine options, the slower version uses twin 1,200hp engines to offer speeds of 21 knots and the faster version has a pair of 1,800 hp engines that reach 28 knots.

The Ilumen will be easily recognised because of its unique styling. The bow is high with the deck line level with the lower edge of the reverse angle pilothouse windows. Glass has been widely used in the design with over 80sqm of the material incorporated. – John Black

INVICTUS 240 FX REFINED FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE

My Reading Room

THE INVICTUS 240 FX FEATURES an outboard powered high-performance hull. The yacht will debut in September at the Cannes Yachting Festival.

Her small size comes with harmonious lines and quality work, offering elegance and comfort for guests, with several possibilities available thanks to the forward zone that can be equipped with a settee or left clear for hard-core fishermen.

Space on the 240 FX was fully exploited with a small dressing room below decks, with the option of a toilet. Additional details demonstrate the multiple uses and sportive character of the new Invictus model: the stern platform has an adjustable backrest that becomes a sun deck when lowered; the console includes a closable compartment with a specially designed icebox.

Every Invictus 240 FX Owner will also receive a shore-side storage box for fishing gear or water skis, a rack for fishing rods or the folding awning and folding table for the foredeck, a perfect complement to the U-shaped settee.

Invictus’ modular design is part and parcel of the 240 FX, with the possibility, even years later, to shift the emphasis between the two versions – Fishing and Leisure.

SHARK LINE 46 BY TAIWAN builder Hyperlien Yacht has won the German iF Design Award, Italian A’ Design Award, German Design Award and Golden Pin Design Award for its shark-inspired exterior and streamlined hull shape.

With decades of architecture, space plan, interior design and industrial design experience, Chinese designer Janus Huang put design aesthetics in first priority, but also strived to fulfil the functional requirements. Until now, his three yacht models have won seven international design awards.

“I think the fashionable and manly Shark Line 46 will catch the eyes of those clients who like the modern style,” says Huang. “Shark line 46 evades the over-concretized design language and presents the perfect flow line of shark body abstractly. She has a luxury and trendy exterior, whether yachting or at anchor, she’ll always be in the spotlight.”

Commented as “a sporty and elegant yacht with dynamic styling” by German Design Award, Shark Line 46 has metal silver black colour, modern and graceful. With teeth as windows and gill slit as decoration of the stern, she simulates shark’s characteristics and shows the mystery of awaiting her prey in the hunting process.

The model has also a delicate interior. Bringing more than 20 years of space design experience to the table, Hyperlien Yacht doubles the feeling of space, gives the Owners a luxury space enjoyment and makes them feel the cabin five feet larger. The large glass sunroof lets the Owner enjoy natural light and fresh air while yachting.

“I believe our design makes a breakthrough in yacht world. Comparing the same level products of other famous brands, now customers can buy a yacht with relatively bigger space, comfy and homey design and performance which is closer to their requirements. Doesn’t it sound attractive? ” Huang says with a smile.

KEIZER 42 DERIVED FROM RUNABOUT CONCEPT

My Reading Room

DUTCH BRAND KEIZER YACHTS is introducing a new 42-foot yacht this summer. The concept was devised by Siep Keizer with design by Vripack / Keizer Yachts. The ship will be built at Bavaria Yachtbau in Germany.

“After a career in yacht brokerage, I saw possibilities for a beautifully lined yacht of about 13 metres with a completely open cockpit and a high volume interior,” says Siep Keizer. “During the development of the Keizer 42, we took a good look at the needs of today’s water sports enthusiast. A new boat like the Keizer 42 should impress on the water through its fine line pattern.

“Functionality should be taken into account as well. Much attention was paid to the interior so the yacht was developed as a hotel studio. It offers generous headroom and sleeping accommodation to four people with a bathroom with toilet and shower cabin. The cockpit cover stores on top of the windscreen making it extremely practical and easy to handle.”

The Keizer 42 is derived from the concept of classic runabout. Its hull and deck are built in GRP with vacuum injection. The yacht is equipped with twin Volvo Penta or Mercruiser engines. Two Volvo D6 400 engines can be chosen, which deliver a top speed of around 40 knots.

LAGOON SEVENTY 7 TO PREMIERE IN CANNES

My Reading Room
My Reading Room

THE GRAND PREMIERE of the Lagoon Seventy 7 sailing catamaran is set for the 2016 Cannes Yachting Festival (Sept 9-11) in France.

“For the Seventy 7 even more than for the others, the mast being moved aft provides ease of handling combined with enhanced performance. In fact, the shortening of the boom makes gybing and reefing much easier. Also, as the aspect ratio of the mainsail – in general terms the ratio of the luff to the foot – increases, the aerodynamic drag decreases,” says naval architect and multihull specialist Marc Van Peteghem.

With the centre of gravity of the entire rig being moved aft, the centre of buoyancy will move aft and reduce pitching.

The ability to increment the foresail surface area enables optimal selection according to the weather conditions and the course. From a broad reach under an asymmetric spinnaker for a maximum downwind angle to the staysail for more demanding conditions or on a closehauled course, by way of the code 0 and the genoa, all sail plans can be covered with considerable ease of handling.

An average 17 to 20 knots of wind is possible for Lagoon Seventy 7. Top speeds of 20 knots and more are achievable in favourable swells with wind strengths.
