Besides the timely appearance of Halima Aden—the first Somali-American to compete in the Miss Minnesota USA pageant while wearing a hijab—to remind us that runways can be a medium for powerful statements, there were other takeaways from this Max Mara outing, too. It taught us that brown—and all its other permutations from beige to the darkest chestnut—is the season’s hottest hue and one worthy of embracing. That the camel coat, Max Mara’s claim to fame, should be the cornerstone of every woman’s wardrobe, thanks to the many reiterations that popped up on the Italian brand’s catwalk. And, that the chicest pantsuits worthy of investing in have been cut looser for extra slouch and rakish ’90s charm.
