She pushed boundaries with how she presented herself: Schwarzenbach’s predilection for louche suits and sweaters ran contrary to what was deemed acceptable in the ’30s. It was precisely this fearless spirit that led Clare Waight Keller to create her third ready-to-wear collection for Givenchy. Based on the concept of a “genderless union”, the designer utilised traditional menswear tailoring codes to craft feminine tuxedo jackets, which were tucked into high-waisted pants for a utilitarian spin. Evening gowns featured sculptural pleats that resembled wings ready to take flight, as did embroidered and fringed capes for Waight Keller’s league of heroines.

High fashion and finger painting seem like a mismatch, but Marni’s spring/summer 2019 collection proved otherwise. Creative Director Francesco Risso’s inspiration this season focused on the fluidity of the design process, and he gave the presentation visual depth by inserting artistic touches. Delightful and earnest, the clothes came to life with vivid prints that recalled the skill of the human hand, and were showcased alongside abstract bags, shoes and jewellery that resembled the most avant-garde art pieces.
